Question about insomnia/sleep disorders?
For as long as I can remember, I have been a very light sleeper (I’m now 17, senior in high school). I have difficulty falling asleep, not because of tossing/turning I’m just not tired. I usually get out of bed and partake in other activities after 45 minutes of attempting to sleep. I thought I might have insomnia but I don’t have any symptoms except difficulty falling asleep– I function perfectly fine on 2-4 hours of sleep a night, have no difficulty concentration or remembering, am not irritable, and do not get tired during the day. I asked my parents, and since I was a baby, I have not slept much. Do I have a sleep disorder, or could I be the rare exception of people who only need a few hours rest each night? p.s. for the few hours I do sleep, I have very odd and vivid/realistic dreams.
Can’t sleep at night?
Alright. As you know, it’s summer. So of course I’m going to be staying up a lot. I stayed up for about 4 nights, sleeping in the daytime. I figured it would be easy to get back on my regular schedule again, because I’ve done it before, but I guess not..
Now I absolutely CANNOT sleep at night, period. At all.
Even if I lay there the whole night, the daytime just makes me tired.
Before all of this happened, not even night time made me this tired.
This is annoying because I have to go to a lot of places but can’t because I always get so tired in the daytime. I wake up in the morning and go back to sleep too quickly to notice that I need to get up.
I don’t want this to mess up my every day schedule, or I’m screwed once I go back to school. Not only that, but if I keep this up, I can possibly start getting sleep disorder symptoms.. because it’s happened before, and it’s not very wonderful..
So, how do I get my schedule back on track? I’ve tried pretty much everything to make me tired.

Why does sleep deprivation make the symptoms of sleep apnea worse?
I recently did a sleep study and found that I have obstructive sleep apnea and it causes me to wake up during the night – often many times. I go through cycles where the problem gets much worse, one night of poor sleep leads to another worse night of interupted sleep, and so on – sometimes for a month or even more. I have heard that sleep deprivation makes the symptoms of sleep apnea much worse, and as I am searching for the right treatments, I was just interested in finding out why – what is the mechanism that causes this? Very strenuous exercise during the day or early evening can have the same effect. Thank you for any insights.
Symptoms insomnia related or something else?
For probably the last several months I have had trouble falling asleep at night. I usually wake up around 10am and avoid taking naps or drinking coffee during the day. I’m usually awake at night until at least 3 or 4am. I get tired but just can’t fall asleep. I function alright during the day, I mean I am getting about 6 hours of sleep. But the continuing sleeplessness is a little nerve racking.
I have tried taking baths before bed. I drink quite a bit of soda but have been drinking caffeine free for the past 2 months. I try laying down at a resonable time and just relaxing with the lights out. Listening to soothing music. I’ve also tried a few over the counter sleep aids which only make me extremely groggy the next morning.
I don’t know if necessarily I have insomnia or if another reason better fits. If I’m still having a problem at the end of this month I’m going to the doctor. Does anyone have any suggestions on either information or ideas as to what my problem is?
